Christmas characters that I love...

Blogmas day 13 is here! And, only 12 days until Christmas!

13 days into December and I have watched over 20 Christmas films and one thing I am noticing is just how special some of the characters are in these classics. So, for this blog post, I thought I would deep dive into some of my all time favourite characters in Christmas movies and why I love them so much.

Mr Poppy - The Nativity

Played By: Marc Wootton

Famous Quote: "You're through the next round!"

Why I Love the Character: Mr Poppy has a similar mental outlook to that of the children he works with. What makes this character so special is just how selfless he is as a teacher and a friend, and the lengths he will go for the children he works with and how hard he works to make sure Mr Maddens has the best Christmas possible. This child-like enthusiasm is what every adult dreams of having at Christmas.

Buddy The Elf - Elf

Played By: Will Ferrell

Famous Quote: "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear"

Why I Love the Character: Similarly to Mr Poppy, his enthusiasm and love for Christmas is what makes this character so special. But I think why I love this character so much is he’s also a fascinating individual: even though he has been raised by elves and Santa himself, he has a unique outlook on life that emphasises all that is best in the world, and in after the two years we have had, I think we should all take a leaf out of Buddy's book.

Arthur - Arthur Christmas

Voiced By: James McAvoy

Famous Quote: "I just want it to be perfect for every kid"

Why I Love the Character: This movie is filled with stand-out characters, but it is the young underdog, Arthur who stands out the most. He has an incredible energy and absolutely loves Christmas, which is often what makes a perfect festive character and has helped make him an iconic one. What makes Arthur so special is the effort he puts in to make sure that no child is without a gift at Christmas, and whilst he knows that the true meaning of Christmas isn't what is under the tree, he knows just how sad Gwen would be knowing that she won't get the gift she truly wants this Christmas. Arthur brings so much love and happiness to the film and he is one of my absolute favourites.

Karen - Love Actually

Played By: Emma Thompson

Famous Quote: "Get a grip, people hate sissies. No-one's ever gonna shag you if you cry all the time"

Why I Love the Character: Karen deals with such a hard time during this film due to the fact she finds out her husband is in the early stages of having an affair. However, her strength in dealing with that situation, remaining dedicated to her children, and pushing forwards helps make her a truly iconic character. Karen is the perfect example of a brilliant mother and caring individual who puts others needs before hers and it is such an inspiring thing to witness. The scene in which she is expecting a necklace from her husband and instead receives a CD which solidifies her accusations towards him is heartbreaking. She puts up a front for her family and continues the day, not spoiling it for her children. Emma Thompson is also an incredible actor who portrays this role so brilliantly.

Kevin McCallister - Home Alone

Played By: McCauley Kulkin

Famous Quote: "Would you please tell him that instead of presents this year, I just want my family back"

Why I Love the Character: Need I say more, Kevin is one of the most beloved and iconic Christmas characters. Kevin creates the most festive fun for himself, decorating the house and making sure that if his family did return, they would be welcomed back into a festive wonderland. On top of that, his protection of the house is so commendable and fun to watch. He creates tons of different traps to stop the burglars from entering his house and then from stealing anything, which provides some amazing slapstick comedy and amazing, iconic scenes. He is adorable, and yet has this sense of maturity that has allowed the movie to be a Christmas classic for a long time. Everyone loves Kevin, and even years later, he still remains everyone's favourite Christmas character.
