Happy 17th December everyone! Hope you are all having a great festive period and staying safe. Only a week left until the big day.
Everyone loves a Christmas classic, they are some of the best festive films to watch. However, some of my new favourite films have been released within the past few years. I think, these will be the new classics of the future for the next generation. Now, this isn't to say that the classics will ever die, but I think it is time to allow a few new movies to enter the classics list.
Here are a list of my top 5 favourite recent Christmas movies that I will be adding to my essential watchlist every Christmas.
Noelle.
"Kris Kringle's daughter is full of Christmas spirit but wishes she could do something important like her brother Nick, who will take over for their father this Christmas. When Nick is about to crumble like a gingerbread cookie from all the pressure, Noelle suggests he take a break and get away...but when he doesn't return, Noelle must find her brother and bring him back in time to save Christmas".
I loved this movie! It was a bit cheesy at times, but isn't that what Christmas is all about. Anna Kendrick is great in it, it has just the right amount of Christmas magic and spirit and is visually really pleasing. It also has a great message (including a feminist one, which I love) and is really good for all the family. If you are looking for an easy yet fun watch this Christmas that isn't a typical Christmas classic, I would absolutely recommend this one.
2. The Christmas Chronicles "To capture Santa Claus on camera, siblings Kate and Teddy devise a plan on the eve of Christmas. However, when things go awry, they are forced to team up with Saint Nick and save the holiday in time".
This movie surprised me! I really didn't think I would enjoy it nearly as much as I did, but it was incredible. Not only is the story incredible, but the actors are on par, especially Kurt Russel who was born to be Santa. The story has an element of grief and sadness which roots it in reality, which makes the elf magic and silly nature of the story much less cringe, which is what I think makes it a perfect new Christmas classic. This will be one I will absolutely be returning to every Christmas from now on.
3. Last Christmas
"Influenced by ambivalence, Katarina, an aspiring singer, works as an elf in Central London. However, she gains a new perspective on life when she meets Tom".
As dramatic as this movie is, it is filled with heart and humour that makes the kinda outrageous storyline sort of passable. Also, it's a Christmas movie so who really cares if the story is ridiculous. As the movie is set to the backdrop of WHAM! songs, it also makes the music of this movie really enjoyable and fun. Emilia Clarke is perfect for roles like this, it is very reminiscent of her role in Me before you. Henry Golding is also really great in this movie, but is great in every movie because it is Henry Golding.
4. Klaus "After proving himself to be the worst student at the academy, a postman is sent to a frozen town in the North where he discovers a reclusive toymaker named Klaus".
Similarly to The Christmas Chronicles, this movie surprised me. I didn't really know what to expect going into watching this movie for the first time, but the art style on the poster had always intrigued me. And, I am glad I watched. It is such an interesting and original take on the classic Santa Clause tale, and whilst the story and voice acting is great, the animation/drawing is mind-blowing. It is stunning, it makes you not want to look away and I am in genuine awe of people who can draw like that. If you have been put off watching this because it is relatively new and not a typical Christmas movie, I urge you to watch ASAP. You won't be disappointed.
5. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
"Jeronicus, a toymaker, is shattered after his assistant steals his book of ideas and a unique matador doll. He loses his will to create new toys until years later when his granddaughter visits him".
This movie is magical, colourful, heartwarming, fun, exciting and most importantly original. Often enough, movies are just copies or remakes, but this movie truly is something new. The cast is outstanding, and everyone is a stand out performer on the screen. This is Netflix's Christmas answer to The Greatest Showman, so if you loved that movie as much as I did, you will love this!
I hope this list has inspired you to try out a new Christmas movie. And whilst I love the classics just as much as the next person, people are still making incredible Christmas movies, they are just hidden amongst everyone's festive favourites.
