A full week of Blogmas is complete! Happy Day 7 everyone! Only 18 days until the big day, I hope you are all excited and getting ready for the best time of the year.
I’m not sure what it is about certain movies, but they give off such a Christmas energy, even though they may not be set in the festive season. Maybe it is just me, but there are certain movies that must be watched in December, even though they have nothing to do with Christmas.
So, here is a list of my favourite Christmas films that aren’t strictly Christmas films. Some may shock you, but, if you are like me and really vibe from energies then I think you will know exactly why I chose this selection.
Before you read on, can you guess any movies that may be on my list?
I think the most obvious one must be the Harry Potter franchise. It could be argued that portions of these movies are set at Christmas, but I am going to argue that they are absolutely not set at Christmas enough for it to qualify. I think what makes this such a Christmas movie is the nostalgia and cosy feel they give off, and potentially the fact that ITV seem to screen every film every year in the lead up to Christmas.
Narnia is another of these films. Snow, winter and Ice Queens just does it for me! I don’t even think Narnia is that good of a movie, but it hits different at Christmas time. The vintage feel, the themes of family and love just resonate with Christmas and it is one of those movies that I will only ever watch in December. You will never catch me watching Narnia in June.
Mean Girls is another movie that, for some reason, I really struggle enjoying any other time of year besides Christmas. Let’s take out the iconic jingle bell rock scene, this movie is not even remotely Christmassy, but that scene… That scene alone changes my whole love of the movie! Not only is it extremely funny, but is such a crucial moment in the movie for the relationships between the girls that it has just always felt so much more important than the others.
(Sorry, not sorry, but the best adaptation) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I can’t tell if this is just my love of Johnny Depp or if, like Narnia, the family spirit is what makes the movie so magical and special to watch at Christmastime. Yes, it does take place in the Winter and there is snow, but besides that, nothing about this film relates to anything Christmassy, and yet, here I am, finding myself wanting to watch it only in December. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also, as the name clearly states, features a hell of a lot of chocolate so maybe that aspect has also subconsciously told my brain that this film is a festive favourite.
I am noticing a theme with some of these movies, which also follows with my next pick. The Sound of Music. For 11 months out of the year, I HATE this movie, but, if it is on TV over December, there is no doubt I will sit down and watch it, all three hours of it. These movies, including this one, are movies that I would watch growing up as a child in December when they were on TV. We would highlight them in our Radio Times and made sure we all sat down to watch.
Which brings me on to my final pick, and potentially the most obvious one.
The Wizard of Oz! It is absolutely not Christmas if you don't find yourself and all the family watching (and absolutely falling asleep) this on the big day! It just is that Christmas classic without it actually having anything to do with the season. I love everything about this movie. I have also performed in the musical version of the movie which adds that extra little bit of specialness to my watch. I am also that annoying family member who sings all the words to every song when people are just trying to watch and have a nap after dinner!
Thank you for reading day 7 of Blogmas! I am having the most fun writing them and I hope you enjoy reading them!
Tomorrow's blog is a fun (non-festive) blog. I will give you a clue...
