After having such a busy week, I decided to spend my weekend watching as many movies and TV shows as I could. On Saturday, I finished watching Schitts Creek on Netflix, which I would absolutely recommend along with finishing my rewatch of Sex Education, also on Netflix in preparation for the release of season 3 in September and I can't wait for it!
This meant, Sunday was left for a day filled with movies! And it most certainly was.
(All of these movies are currently streaming on Netflix)
1. The Secret Life of Pets 2 - ⭐⭐

At a farm, Max meets the sheepdog Rooster who tries to help him overcome his fears. Back home, Gidget loses Max's favourite toy, while Snowball tries to rescue a white tiger cub, Hu. I'm not the biggest fan of the first movie, however, I recently rewatched it and found it quite fun so I thought I would give the second a go. This movie is bang average. Yes, the animation is fun and the voice acting is good, but this isn't a new concept and the storyline is very, very boring. Whilst I acknowledge that I am not this film's primary target audience, this is a "family movie" and yet I can imagine most young children finding this incredibly boring. A new concept should have been introduced, and whilst the film develops with the addition of a baby to the family, for majority of the film, the dogs are back on a lone adventure, making this subplot entirely pointless. I would still stick to the first one if you were ever in the mood for an animal based adventure animated action film set in New York, but I would pass on watching the second.
2. Eurovision Song Contest - ⭐⭐⭐

Better than I was expecting. Two small-town singers chase their pop star dreams at a global music competition, where scheming rivals, high stakes and onstage mishaps test their bond. Will Ferrel and Rachel McAdams star, and whilst I wasn't convinced that this was going to be the best movie I had ever seen, it was still filled with love, happiness and humour. It is incredibly silly and definitely shouldn't be taken seriously, yet it is so much fun and pays great respect to Eurovision. With cameos from Graham Norton (he steals the show, as usual) and amazing campy musical numbers, I would 100% recommend watching this, maybe with a few glasses of wine in you!
3. A Cinderella Story - ⭐⭐

After her father dies, Sam's stepmother and stepsisters continually exploit her. She finds respite in an online pen pal, Nomad, and decides to meet him at a school dance. This movie is filled with cringe quotes, slapstick humour and dreadful outfit choices, but the nostalgia and feeling of being a child again and watching this film with all my friends after we had rented it from Blockbusters makes it feel so special. The story and dialogue is dreadful, it is lazy and boring and often feels like a parody movie. Yet, the early 2000's clothes, phones and text talk make for an incredible film that will forever go down in history. Jennifer Coolidge steals the spotlight, but it wouldn't be a film starring Coolidge if she didn't. Watching this film now, after not seeing it for over 10 years, I can safely say that whilst it has its moments, and it definitely has a few of those, this film will absolutely stand the test of time - as cringe as it may be.
4. The School of Rock - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Dewey Finn, an amateur rock enthusiast, slyly takes up his friend's job by posing as a substitute teacher. Bearing no qualifications for it, he instead starts training the students to form a band. One of my absolute favourites, and a movie I always watch when I need a good pick me up. This is, without a doubt, Jack Black's stand out role. He is phenomenal as the character and truly embodies the role like he is playing himself. The rest of the band are also incredible and deservedly should get the praise they get. Miss Mullins. The film is filled with enormous heart and love. It makes you as the audience member truly feel for these characters and hope that they achieve all they want. You place yourself within the characters and can relate to the way they are feeling. It is incredibly well written, the music is outstanding and timeless and will be one that I forever rewatch. This was the first movie I seen as a child that taught me just how truly crap the world is, but just how good you can make it if you do what you want to do! So, stick it to the man.
