As the weather changes, and school/work begins again, now is the perfect time to cozy up on the sofa, cup of tea in hand and watch some great films. And turns out, Netflix feels the same way. With streaming and "home cinema" becoming so much more prevalent since the pandemic began, it is no wonder Netflix are taking this in their stride and creating blockbuster after blockbuster, and releasing them for just £5.99 a month.
Here are some new Netflix Original releases and their dates that I am most looking forward to in the coming weeks. What new Netflix releases are you looking forward to?
1. September 2nd - Afterlife of the Party
A social butterfly (Victoria Justice) experiences the biggest party foul of all—dying. But she's given a second chance to right her wrongs on Earth by proving she’s worthy enough to get into the big VIP room in the sky. This sounds like the ULTIMATE popcorn movie and I am completely here for it. The trailer seems fun and filled with lots of light comedy, funny moments along with the feel of a slight romance aspect and will be the perfect film to start off the new release of originals. Watch the trailer below:
2. September 22nd - Intrusion
Spooky vibes incoming... When a husband and wife (Logan Marshall-Green and Freida Pinto) move to a small town, a home invasion leaves the wife traumatised and suspicious that those around her might not be who they seem. If the trailer is anything to go by, this film will have you on the edge of your seat. At first, I thought the trailer may have given away a large plot point, yet it has actually made me much more intrigued and excited to watch. Horror isn't my favourite genre, yet psychological thrillers with an edge are films I very much look forward to, and I don't think this will disappoint.
3. October 1st - The Guilty
Antoine Fuqua directs this tense thriller set over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call centre, as call operator Joe Baylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger—but soon discovers that nothing is as it seems. Gyllenhaal's voice in the trailer is already award winning, the urgency and suspense he creates in less than a minute is incredible and this film seems like it's going to be one to watch. If you love crime documentaries, suspense thrillers or Jake, I would definitely watch. This is the release that I think I am most excited about.
4. October 20th - Stuck Together
Fancy reliving lockdown? Seven families live in the Parisian apartment building at 8, Rue de l’Humanite—and they didn’t escape to the countryside at the arrival of the coronavirus. Three months of life under lockdown will reveal the best and worst of these neighbours. I am incredibly curious to see how a pandemic movie, after living in a pandemic, is going to play out. As we all have that shared lived experience, it will be interesting to see how other people viewed the lockdowns. My lockdowns didn't include the horrors that I think this film may include, but I am still intrigued to see what they do with a film about COVID-19. Also, we can expect this to be the start of a lot of films made about the past 2 years of our lives, so start getting used to a lot of movies be pandemic based.
5. November 5th - A Cop Movie
An experiment in documentary and narrative storytelling sheds light on one of Mexico and the world's most controversial institutions, the police force and the causes of the impunity crisis plaguing the justice system. If documentaries are your thing, this may be the film to tune into. An interesting insight into a justice system that is so often mimicked in mainstream film and media, and seeing a real life take of this will be something new and original.
6. November 19th - tick tick...Boom
I am SO ready for this. And I am so ready for a new group of people to be introduced to it. On the cusp of his 30th birthday, promising young theatre composer Jonathan Larson (Andrew Garfield) navigates love, friendship, and the pressures of life as an artist in New York City in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature directorial debut. If you are a musical fan, if you are not, this is a must watch! If you know anything about this musical, or the main character, you know this is going to be phenomenal. This has been in the works for a long time, and I am certain they are going to absolutely nail it. Also, anyone else obsessed with Andrew Garfield? And he is singing! I am here for it! Watch the trailer below:
